Surah Al-Waqi’ah: The Surah of Wealth, Sustenance, Hadiths & The 3 Groups

Mufti Farhan Qasmi
•Shahadat-ul-Alimiyyah, Hafs & Shu’bah Tajweed Ijazah

Widely recognized across the Muslim world as "Surat al-Ghina" (The Surah of Wealth and Self-Sufficiency), Surah Al-Waqi’ah (سُورَةُ الْوَاقِعَةِ - Chapter 56) is recited nightly by millions seeking protection from financial hardship and spiritual poverty. Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) famously recited it every evening and instructed his daughters to do the same, citing the Prophet’s statement: "Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqi’ah every night will never be afflicted by poverty." (Ibn Asakir, Al-Bayhaqi). Beyond its virtues of sustenance, this 96-verse Meccan masterpiece delivers a dramatic, cinematic panorama of the Day of Resurrection, dividing all of humanity into three distinct cosmic destinies. In this guide, we examine the Hadiths, analyze the three groups, and explore the true meaning of spiritual and material sustenance.

Key Learning Objectives

  • The authentic historical practice of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) reciting Al-Waqi’ah on his deathbed.
  • The true Islamic definition of "Wealth" (Ghina an-Nafs - richness of the soul and barakah in income).
  • The 3 Cosmic Groups: As-Saabiqoon (The Foremost), Ashab al-Yameen (The Righteous), and Ashab ash-Shimal (The Damned).
  • The 4 Biological & Ecological Miracles: Human reproduction, agriculture, drinking water, and fire.
  • Why the opening description of the earth shaking (Rajj) and mountains crumbling humbles human arrogance.
  • Establishing a 7-minute nightly family recitation routine.

1. The Deathbed Hadith of Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA)

Why the great companion refused gold and left his daughters Surah Al-Waqi’ah

When the venerable companion Abdullah ibn Mas’ud (RA) was on his deathbed, the third Caliph of Islam, Uthman ibn Affan (RA), visited him and asked:

"What is your complaint?" Ibn Mas’ud replied: "My sins." Uthman asked: "What do you desire?" Ibn Mas’ud replied: "The mercy of my Lord." Uthman offered: "Shall I not order that a generous stipend be given to your daughters from the public treasury?"

Ibn Mas’ud replied with words of immortal faith: "Do you fear poverty for my daughters? I have instructed my daughters to recite Surah Al-Waqi’ah every single night! For indeed, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say: Whoever recites Surah Al-Waqi’ah every night will never be stricken by poverty." (Recorded by Abu Ya’la, Ibn Asakir, and Al-Bayhaqi).

Scholarly Nuance on the Hadiths

While classical Hadith critics like Imam Ad-Daraqutni analyzed technical chains of transmission, scholars across all generations agree that reciting Surah Al-Waqi’ah nightly brings immense Barakah, mental tranquility, and freedom from financial anxiety.

2. The 3 Groups on the Day of Resurrection

How humanity will be permanently sorted into three cosmic categories

When the Inevitable Event (Al-Waqi’ah) occurs, humanity will no longer be classified by wealth, race, passport, or lineage. All mankind will be divided into three groups:

1. The Foremost of the Foremost (السَّابِقُونَ السَّابِقُونَ): The spiritual elite. Those who raced to obey Allah without hesitation. They are the Muqarraboon (those brought nearest to the Throne). They enjoy couches encrusted with gold and jewels, eternal youth serving goblets of pure drink that causes no headache or intoxication, and greeting one another with: "Salam! Salam!"

2. The Companions of the Right Hand (أَصْحَابُ الْيَمِينِ): The vast multitude of ordinary righteous believers. They dwell among thornless lote trees, banana trees with fruits piled in layers, extended shade, and gushing water.

3. The Companions of the Left Hand (أَصْحَابُ الشِّمَالِ): Those who denied resurrection and persisted in major sins. They suffer in scorching winds, boiling water, and suffocating black smoke.

3. The 4 Existential Arguments for Divine Power

Challenging human technology with basic building blocks of life

In the second half of the Surah, Allah challenges human intellect with four rhetorical questions:

1. Human Conception (Ayahs 58–59): "Have you seen that seed which you emit? Is it you who creates it, or are We the Creator?" Genetic programming, fertilization, and embryonic development are miracles beyond human control.

2. Agriculture & Food (Ayahs 63–65): "Have you seen that which you sow? Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the Grower?" If Allah willed, a single drought or blight could turn fertile crops into dry debris.

3. Fresh Drinking Water (Ayahs 68–70): "Have you seen the water that you drink? Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or are We the Sender?" If Allah willed, rain would fall salty and bitter.

4. Fire & Energy (Ayahs 71–73): "Have you seen the fire that you ignite? Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the Producer?" Fire is both a daily necessity and a reminder of the Hellfire.

4. What is the True Meaning of "Sustenance" in Islam?

Moving beyond material wealth to divine contentment (Qana’ah)

Many Muslims misunderstand the promise of wealth in Surah Al-Waqi’ah, assuming it guarantees millions of dollars in a bank account. In Islamic theology, Rizq (sustenance) is far richer than physical currency:

• Barakah in Wealth: Having enough money to meet your needs without debt or humiliation.

• Peace of Mind (Qana’ah): The Prophet ﷺ said: "True richness is not having an abundance of goods, but true richness is the richness of the soul (Ghina an-Nafs)." (Sahih Al-Bukhari).

• Spiritual Sustenance: The blessing of healthy children, physical vitality, protection from catastrophic illnesses, and steadfast faith on deathbeds.

Reciting Surah Al-Waqi’ah realigns your heart so that you never beg or fear poverty from created beings.

5. The Soul at the Throat: The Moment of Final Transition

Contemplating Ayahs 83 to 87 on human helplessness at death

The Surah delivers one of the most sobering scenes in literature: "Then why, when the soul at death reaches the throat, and you are at that moment looking on—and We are nearer to him than you, but you do not see—why do you not, if you are not subject to divine judgment, bring it back, if you are truthful?"

All the wealth, doctors, intensive care units, and technology on earth cannot pull back a single departing soul once its appointed term arrives.

6. Nightly Recitation Architecture: Building the 8-Minute Habit

How to recite Surah Al-Waqi’ah after Maghrib or Isha prayer

Surah Al-Waqi’ah contains 96 verses and spans approximately 4.5 pages. At a moderate recitation pace, it takes only 7 to 8 minutes to recite.

• Ideal Timing: Recite it between Maghrib and Isha, or immediately following the Sunnah prayers of Isha before dinner.

• Family Involvement: Recite it aloud with your family so your children absorb the rhythmic, rhyming verses and internalize the descriptions of Paradise.

Common Reciter Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

⚠️ Pitfall: Reciting Surah Al-Waqi’ah solely for money without any intention of spiritual reflection.
✅ Correct Recitation: Purify your intention: seek Allah’s pleasure, protection from poverty, and reflection on the afterlife.
⚠️ Pitfall: Leaving lawful work and relying purely on recitation without striving for a halal livelihood.
✅ Correct Recitation: Tawakkul (reliance on Allah) requires tying your camel: recite the Surah AND pursue ethical hard work.
⚠️ Pitfall: Rushing through the rhyming verse endings and clipping the Madd.
✅ Correct Recitation: Preserve the natural 2-count Madd Tabee’ee and Madd ‘Arid lis-Sukoon (2, 4, or 6 counts).
⚠️ Pitfall: Stopping on words in a way that disrupts the vivid imagery of Paradise.
✅ Correct Recitation: Follow the sanctioned stopping signs printed in the Mus’haf.
