Complete Guide to Salah Recitations: Arabic Text, Transliteration & Word-by-Word Meaning
Every single day, practicing Muslims perform at least 17 obligatory units (Rak’ahs) of prayer, standing before their Creator in silent dawn, midday, afternoon, sunset, and night. Yet a tragic reality for millions of non-Arabic-speaking Muslims in the West—both lifelong believers and new converts alike—is that daily Salah is often recited as an empty, phonetic ritual. Many recite ancient Arabic words from memory without understanding a single sentence they utter. When you don’t understand what you are whispering in Ruku or Tashahhud, your mind inevitably wanders to grocery lists, work emails, and daily anxieties. In this definitive prayer masterclass, we provide the complete Arabic text, accurate transliteration, and word-by-word English translation for every single phrase of the Muslim prayer.

1. Stage 1: Entering the Sacred Sanctuary (Takbeer & Thana)
How to sever ties with the worldly realm at the start of prayer
When you raise your hands to your earlobes or shoulders and pronounce "اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ" (Allaahu Akbar), you enter the state of Ihram—a sacred perimeter where speaking, eating, laughing, or attending to worldly matters is forbidden.
You then whisper the Opening Supplication (Du’a al-Istiftah / Thana):
• Subhaanaka: Glory be to You (You are completely free from any imperfection, weakness, or flaw).
• Allaahumma wa bi-hamdik: O Allah, and all praise is for You.
• Wa tabaarakasmuk: And blessed is Your Name (invoking Your Name brings increase and barakah).
• Wa ta’aalaa jadduk: And exalted is Your Majesty and Grandeur.
• Wa laa ilaaha ghayruk: And there is no god worthy of worship besides You.
Mindset Shift
When you say "Allahu Akbar", realize that your career, mortgage, bills, family dilemmas, and social media feed are TINY compared to the Creator of billions of galaxies.
2. Stage 2: The Physical Bowing (Ruku) and Rising
Connecting your spinal posture with supreme reverence
As you bow horizontally with a straight back, place your hands firmly on your knees with fingers spread, and recite three times:
(Subhaana Rabbiyal-‘Adheem - Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent).
Notice: You do not say "The Magnificent" in abstract; you say "MY Lord" (Rabbi)—the One who raised you from infancy and sustains every heartbeat.
When you rise back up, you declare with absolute certainty:
(Sami’a Allaahu liman hamidah - Allah hears the one who praises Him).
Then in standing stillness, you respond:
(Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd, hamdan katheeran tayyiban mubaarakan feeh - Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise, abundant, beautiful, and full of blessings!).
3. Stage 3: The Supreme Climax: Prostration (Sujood)
Where the servant is closest to Allah Almighty
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: "The nearest a servant comes to his Lord is when he is prostrating, so increase your supplications therein." (Sahih Muslim).
In Sujood, seven bones touch the dust: your forehead and nose, your two palms, your two knees, and the toes of both feet. In this lowest, most vulnerable physical posture, your soul ascends to the highest spiritual heights as you whisper:
(Subhaana Rabbiyal-A’laa - Glory be to my Lord, the Most High).
Between the two prostrations, you sit upright and seek divine restoration:
(Rabbi-ghfir lee, warhamnee, wa ‘aafinee, wahdinee, warzuqnee - Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, grant me health/wellbeing, guide me, and provide for me).
4. Stage 4: The Sitting Testimony (Tashahhud / Attahiyyat)
The historic celestial greeting between the Prophet ﷺ and Allah
During the sitting position (Jalsah), you recite the immortal words of Tashahhud:
(At-Tahiyyaatu lillaahi was-salawaatu wat-tayyibaat - All compliments, greetings, prayers, and pure words belong to Allah).
(As-Salaamu ‘alayka ayyuhan-Nabiyyu wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh - Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings).
(As-Salaamu ‘alaynaa wa ‘alaa ‘ibaadillaahis-saaliheen - Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah).
(Ash-hadu an laa ilaaha illallaah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasooluh - I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger).
5. Stage 5: Durood Ibrahimiyyah and The 4 Protections
Blessings upon Prophet Ibrahim and seeking refuge before the final Salam
Following Tashahhud, you send blessings upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and Prophet Ibrahim (AS):
Right before saying the final Salam to exit prayer, the Prophet ﷺ strictly advised seeking refuge from four catastrophic trials:
(O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the torment of Hellfire, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of living and dying, and from the evil trial of the False Messiah / Dajjal - Sahih Al-Bukhari).
6. The Exit: Spreading Peace to Humanity (Tasleem)
Concluding prayer with universal blessings of peace
You conclude your audience with Allah by turning your head over your right shoulder and then your left shoulder, looking at the angels and the community, saying:
(As-Salaamu ‘Alaykum wa Rahmatullaah - May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you).
You enter prayer disconnected from the world; you exit prayer showering peace and mercy upon humanity.
